Around 20 years ago I took a leap of faith and made my first tandem skydive. Instantly I was hooked. I went on to make a second tandem and my first solo. Then life happened.
Years passed and I was able to make another tandem jump with one of my best friends to scratch off of his bucket list. I knew I still had the itch but couldn’t scratch. Then life happened.
Needed something to focus my time and attention on. Decided to start up skydiving again in 2018. Proceeded to go through with the class over a few months and after 25 jumps I had obtained my class ‘A’ license. To keep the license current, you have to jump once every 60 days. I made it back to knock out 2 more jumps to bring my total to 27. Then life happened.
I tried to go make a jump to stay current but weather wouldn’t allow. License lapsed and I decided to focus on other life goals. Bought a Harley, started traveling more, survived a pandemic, survived multiple natural disasters including multiple hurricanes, ice storms, and random floods, supply shortages made work difficult, etc. Then life happened.
Needed something to focus my time and attention on. It had been over 4 years since my last jump. Two weeks ago I made it back to the drop zone to take the refresher ground school. To my disappointment, there was a ‘new’ weight requirement for student jumpers. The jump zone manager told me I had to loose 9lbs and come back. Usually not a hard task for guys when you think of water weight. However, this being the start of a new year, I had already lost 15lbs. This was a challenge I had to overcome.
Today, I made it back to the drop zone. Met the weight requirement, met with new instructor, came up with plan, and successfully made jump 28 today. Was pretty basic, needed to get that muscle memory back. Had fun under canopy going through some clouds and making some spiral banked turns. Landed with knees slightly bent but stayed standing up. I debated making a second jump today but clouds rolling in and I wanted to have an excuse to come back in couple days or weeks.
Skydiving is an adrenaline packed spiritual experience that I recommend everyone to try. The rush of free fall and the views under canopy are remarkable. Don’t let the excuse of being afraid of heights deter you as I get the shaky legs just being a few stories up on a building. We all need to take a leap of faith every now and then mi amigos.
