Cameron Parish, Louisiana-Louisiana Fur & Wildlife Festival

Love festivals, and the oldest and coldest in Louisiana is in my home parish, Cameron Louisiana. The festival embraces the hunting and trapping that defined this area years ago. Now, it introduces each new generation with the trades and skills of the people that grew up on this land. I love seeing the people embrace the food, music, and culture of my hometown parish. There are pageant queens from across the state that make the trip to represent here in Cameron. There are friends and family that I see only on this weekend when we all come back to celebrate our roots. There are law enforcement officers that show off their riding skills and respect for the communities they serve. I saw a LCPD deputy catch a stuffed alligator just to give it to a kid who was grinning ear to ear. Part of this festival includes skeet shooting. It’s a pleasure to watch attendees walk around with shotguns in hand and compete intensely at competition levels of shooting. Never have I felt uncomfortable here with so many carrying guns. We all respect each other and enjoy our beers. I love seeing people from out of town attend for the first time. I took a couples picture who was saying “they shooting targets and we drinking beer.” That’s how I grew up and hope to see others embrace. There are hundreds of different festivals all over the world, country, and state. Get out and enjoy! That’s my plan mi amigos!
